This year’s Oscar nominations were released a few days ago, and they got us thinking – if there’s a category for best makeup shouldn’t there also be one for best car? With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of film’s most famous vehicles. This list profiles famous automobiles both past and present, and we’ve included everything from world-saving, semi-truck robots, to a muscle car named after a civil war general. Check out the cars below the jump…
The General Lee – Dukes of Hazard
More than just the Dukes’ ride of choice, the General Lee embodies the muscle car craze of the 60s and 70s. This suped-up Dodge Challenger (or Dodge Charger, depending on what season you’re talking about) has jumped just about everything – from medians to other automobiles – and it’s ability to allude the law has earned the General Lee the first spot on our list.
Any one of James Bond’s cars could have made it on here, but we decided to stick with the classic Aston Martin DB5. While the DB5’s sleek body certainly makes it pleasing to the eye, it were the pop-out machine guns and 3-way revolving license plate that first excited the imagination of movie goers around the world. In total, the DB5 was featured in 5 Bond films, including Goldfinger, Thunderball, and Casino Royale.
Optimus Prime – Transformers
Optimus Prime may be more robot than automobile, but who cares? This transforming semi-truck is just plain cool. Whether he’s sporting his flamed out paint job on the highway, or blowing up Decepticons with his arm cannons, there’s no denying Prime’s on-screen presence.
Knight Industries Two Thousand (“KITT”) – Knight Rider
It’s hard to steal a scene from David Hasselhoff, but this tricked out Pontiac Trans Am certainly gave the Hoff a run for his money on the 80s TV show Knight Rider. More than just a heavy-duty engine and bulletproof windows, the KITT was also equipped with a sassy computer that had the thankless job of putting Hasselhoff in his place. Too bad the KITT didn’t stick around long enough to prevent the Hoff’s ill-fated foray in to pop music…
When it comes to famous cars, you don’t get any bigger than the DMC-12. With an out-of-this-world body design, gullwing doors, and an ability to travel back in time, the Delorean is more than just another American sports car. It’s a film icon.
There you have it, our list of the movie world’s best automobiles. Think we left any out? Leave us a comment and let us know.
